QT Nitrites

Hey everyone

I can't seem to keep my 5 gal. QT Nitrites down. I took a live rock that had been in my DT and put it in my QT. I figured it would work to keep all the levels down but it seams that its only keeping ammonia down and not nitrite. Two days after a water change the nitrites seam to reach over 5ppm. Is there anything else I can do to keep them down besides water changes every other day? or should I not worry so much about nitrites?

My purple dottyback I have in there seams to be very healthy and happy so far. He has been in there for 2 weeks & 2 days. The water changes seem to stress him out quite a bit. He will go in his cave he has in the live rock and stay in there for the rest of the day. The next day he will come out of the cave only if there is food or no one is at the tank.

Nitrites aren't really a concern for marine fish. You could pick up a bottle of Bio-Spira and add some of it to the QT if it's bothering you though. If the fish is eating and behaving normally otherwise, I wouldn't worry.

Ummm, unrelated to your question, but regarding your QT setup - I don't believe rock should be in the QT. You can safely use PVC pipe / elbows for structure / hiding areas. With rock / substrate, some diseases, such as ich will be able to survive and the life cycle will continue. The lack of rock / substrate breaks the cycle for ich.

He is in there just for observation and I don't have a filter for the tank. I thought you're not supposed to put LR in QT because they absorb copper biased meds.
