New Guy - Sorta
Hey everybody!
My name is Shane. I thought I would do a quick into post to say Hi. I am not new to the hobby, but am new to reefcentral. I have kept fish in one way or another for about 25 years. Have experience in raising/breeding discus, heavily planted tanks/brackish/reef etc etc. I say that knowing that I am still learning, a lot, and dont profess to be any type of expert. On anything! I am always open to advice/feedback from others... I had a 70 gallon reef tank that was developing into a pretty cool tank when about 10 years ago life events (divorce!) forced me to sell. My life style changed and I no longer had time/space for a reef tank. I went quite a while without a tank until about a year ago, I picked up a 75 and started back down the path of no end!! I started with a fresh water set up - "low maintenance" and that kept me satisfied for about a year... Now its back to reef keeping!! I live in a small 1 bedroom apt and my tank is in my living room. So, my plan is try and keep this tank as quiet as possible. Water circulation will be handled by a variety of devices including a couple of Fluval canister filters with live rock (no sponges), a mag 7 plumbed internally with mulitple outputs and a couple Aquaclear 110s (no sponges). I am not sure if all those will even be quieter than an sump system!! Lol... Lights are 4-48" HO T5s. Might add a white LED strip to if room allows. Coral will be softies - Looking for animals that dont need as pristine of water conditions as most of the SPS require. I dont currently plan on running a skimmer - I am a fanatic about water changes and actually ran my SPS tank for quite a while before adding a skimmer (although I am not suggesting others do the same). Currently, the 75 is up and running and most of the equipment is running (waiting on the mag 7). I have my first piece of live rock (15lbs) in the tank and will add more every couple of weeks as the paychecks allow... Going to run a bare bottom tank, well, maybe with some scatterings of larger rubble. Already have some algae starting to grow on the LR so am going to begin building the clean up crew this weekend. Lets see - I think thats about it! I live in the Seattle area so if any of you guys want to get together and talk fish (and or drink beer), PM me. Always interested in checkin out other set ups and talking about the hobby... Heres a pics from the old 70: You can see more pics if you want at: http://s865.photobucket.com/user/sha...?sort=3&page=1 Sorry for the marathon post... Looking forward to being a part of the community... Shane C. |
