Tunze wavebox ?

Are these things any good? Also if I get one then would I still need power heads? I was looking at two 500 something gph power heads would the wave box do the same thing/job?

Hmmm. I have both a wave box and two 6105 in my 210gl 6' tank. IMHO The wavebox will give you a smooth rhythmic wave across the whole tank top and bottom, and I believe the corals especially the LPS benefit from this action that no other pump can replicate. (Don't shoot me yet people) Let me explain It does not matter if we are talking Tunze, Echotech, or Jeabo. stand alone pump. Where the difference is, is in the box. It makes a difference. Now the sps need more movement and the pumps on the backside ends provide this, and also help keep the water circulated all around.

So would I have to have power heads along with the wavebox? My tank is only a 55 gal.

If I had to choose just one then I would go for some type of controllable powerheads, and as you can tell I am big fan of Tunze they are dead silent and being able to position them at any angle I want. There are some here that like the Jeabo wp series. Never had one but they are a knockoff of the Tunze, but less expensive. I can only assume the parts and materials they use are of lesser quality.

The person/s I would ask would be Roger or Craig in the Tunze forum here at Reefcentral. Both are great to work with and will give you excellent advice.

A wavebox for a 55g maybe a little overkill, you definitely won't be able to turn one up. The wavebox moves the entire water column but not like a powerhead does, so IMO both are needed. One draw back to a wavebox on a glass tank is the amount of stress it will put on the tank. I took my wavebox off of my 220 because salt creep started showing from the top lip of the tank in one area, since I took it off I haven't seen the salt creep again
