ASM G2 gate valve mod overflowing collection cup

No matter what I do by having the gate valve all the way open or closed the collection cup is immediately overflowing when I attach it to the top of the skimmer. My gate valve mod is like this:

Will physically raising the skimmer a few inches from the bottom of the sump help? The skimmer compartment's water level is constant but it does go up to around 3 or 4 inches below the neck of the skimmer, maybe 3 inches below where the air hose sticks up that's connected to the venturi.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have my gate valve mounted below the elbow coming out of the tee. Lowering the gate valve may lower the water in the cylinder. Not sure if your sump is wide enough to do it that way.
