*! Sump Design Question !*

I was playing around with some ideas and I came up with this design after some research and reading (the first picture). I'm concerned with how adequate the water entering the fuge will mix rather then flow on the surface and exit the fuge. so I came up with the second idea for the sump - adding a third baffle. Any input, experience, critique, tips, tricks would be greatly appreciated!

This setup is actually going to be for freshwater. I know this is a salty forum but this is the best place to get info on sump fuge

i think second one is better, this way you will have water movement in all refugeum, not only on the top layer. If you'll go with the first one, you'll need a powerhead in refugeum to stir water a little bit. And i would remove last wall, you don’t need it there. If am not wrong, there is a sponge after refugemu right? It’ll cache all bubble.

i think that first design is enough. what kind of plants you are going to put there? fast growing plants will fill all refugium and reach water surface too, there would be enough water mixing. in any case, i highly doubt that you can end with 'cleaner' water at the bottom and that dirty water will just pass over

no, but you will have dead spots on the bottom and that can get you into trouble

Hmm, thanks for the replies. I think I may go with the second design. But now I'm considering exonn advice to remove the last wall. Yes exonn, that thing is a sponge. OR what about putting the refugium first, then mechanical filtration, then return?

The only problem I can think of is it would be pretty noisy having the input into the fuge

no, this is not a good plan, all waste will collect in the fuge and it will be much harder to clean, keep it as it is. One of my friends have drain to the fuge in saltwater and now he is making another sump just because of this mistake.

I'm not cleaning the fuge. I actually want organic matter to collect within the fuge.
