Canister Filter for Reef Tank?

Still trying to figure out what works best for my tank. I recently bought a tank that was up and running from someone. He had a few soft corals in the tank, but other than that it was fish and a few inverts (snails, hermits, shrimp).

He had a canister filter going with the tank, I currently have it running as well, but I have been reading that I shouldn't have a canister filter with a reef tank.

I'm currently upgrading the lighting and will begin to start putting some SPS in the tank. I have already added a bunch of LPS, including more softies and zoas.

Tank is 75 gallon, 30 gallon sump, HOB protein skimmer. roughly 60lbs of Live Rock and 2" live sand bed.

Thanks!

I have a fluval on my reef tank right now. I put it on to run extra carbon for something about a year ago and just never took it off. I have a mixed reef with a bit of everything. Never had an issue with it and my tank seemed to like it, so I left it.

Just make sure you keep it clean.

I would use the canister for media and get an insump protein skimmer to replace the hang on back skimmer.

What pads/filters do you recommend using?

I am using all the pads it came with, but I only run carbon thru it. you could put GFO in a media bag and run that in the canister filter also as an option. but again just make sure to clean it on a regular basis.

mine is taken apart and cleaned real good once a month. some times more if needed.
