Do I need Emergency Over flow
I want to set up a Herbie over flow in my new 120. The problem is I only have two holes and I want to use one as a return line for my pump because my tank is viewable from all sides. I calculated my water volume in the sump including the water volume from the auto top off. This is not enough water to cause my DT to overflow, so I feel I don't need the emergency drain pipe. The reverse is also true my sump can handle the water volume from the DT if my pump fails.

Well if you fell that if your drain clogs and your tank could handle all the water your pump can pump into the top of your tank then ok... But if your not home your pump is gonna run dry none of your water will temp regulated, etc it's up to you... You have 4 viewing sides? That's cool but sucks you only have 2 holes

When I said I calculated the water volume it meant I looked at the sump and said yeah that'll work . Now that I "forreals" calculated it I'm learning that my eye sight is deficient in the volume guessing category, I definitely need the emergency pipe.
My tank is visible all around except for about six inches in the left corner where there is a column. I guess I'll just have to run my return up the column (So Ugly). |

use both holes, and run your return over the top somehow, not worth taking the chance.

Run it up behind your overflow, then build a box that matches your stand to cover it all so that it looks nice and finished.
