20g stocking? Is this overstocked?
So I am going to set up my first saltwater tank (actually my first ever fish tank besides a betta) and it is going to be a 20 gallon long. And I was wondering what you guys think of my stocking list. Is this too much fish:
-x2 Ocellaris Clownfish [Sanjay Photon] -x1 Royal Gramma Basslet -x1 Blue/Green Reef Chromis A total of four fish. What do you think about the stock? Is it overstocked? Or could I possibly add a small green clown goby as well maybe? I will be getting a skimmer and some pretty high quality equipment for the tank. Any feedback would be appreciated. |

I would think you're in that range. A good amount of fish but not really over stocked

I would take out the royal gramma and chromis and add the clown goby and perhaps a second small goby/shrimp pair.

Okay how about:
x2 Ocellaris Clownfish [Sanjay Photon] x1 Royal Gramm Basslet x1 Dracula Goby w/ pistol shrimp x1 Maybe some sort of blue fish under 2"? Does anyone know of a small reef safe fish that is blue and grows under 2"? I was thinking of a blue damselfish but I heard they are especially aggressive in smaller tanks. Any suggestions? So what do you think of the stock. I am aware the pair of photon clowns and dracula goby can be kind of pricey. But I just like them both soo much! But yeah this wouldn't be too much would it? |

how much filtration do you have i pllan to quarantine all my fish for two months. I also am going to have double ore more filtration then normal. The tank will have the fish added one or 2 per week after quarantine.

I have a Wheelers goby and a pistol shrimp paired together. If you don't like your sand being stirred up and mixed around I wouldn't suggest getting one. I myself like the combo and its fascinating how they work together

I don't think it's too bad. If you have good hiding spots and your parameters are all in check!

Quarantine has nothing to do with your water quality and adding a fish a week x8 weeks is overdoing it. And may I ask what you plan to do for filtration? Also are you considering adding clean up crew or other inverts? Coral? You clearly believe you understand what you are doing but I dont think you really are grasping the amount of room all of those fish need. The very first fish I would take off that list is Midas Blenny....then three more from the list. A 20L with a pair of clowns should not have more than two other small fish with them honestly. Please consider that our interests lie in the fish's health and not in just trying to stomp on your hopes and dreams for an awesome tank. I believe that most of us on RC are providing advice so you CAN have the most awesome tank your tank size will allow! |

Gotta love when people ask for advice and then ignore it.

Blue/Green Chromis can grow up to 3½" so keep that in mind.

In my opinion, for a 20 gallon. You should really just have maybe 2 small schooling fish, such as a clownfish pair or a pair of fire fish (remember fire fish will jump) And then a small goby, such as a randalls goby. Another cool fish would be a pygmy wrasse if you could find one. If you are looking for more movement than that, just stock the tank with euphyllia or other corals with movement, and maybe a shrimp like a cleaner shrimp or a peppermint. In such a small tank that is plenty of fish and plenty of movement!
Remember when it comes to stocking, its always better to do less than it is to do more! |

Clown gobies are teeny little fish so those are a good choice. A firefish pair is also a good choice for a 20g. Although for myself personally, I would choose two firefish and one clown goby out of that list. But I think the second clown goby is not a big problem. Its the Chromis I would be concerned with. If you want to do lots of water changes and run a good skimmer you can have many fish but you'll still be overcrowded and have some unhappy fish. ***Please remember that most of the fish we purchase are babies and will still need to grow to their adult sizes and behaviors. |
