new setup

Hello everyone,

I have a question i purchased a used 180 gallon tank fired it up with sand from a 100 galon and abot 120 lbs of live rock from a running tank had been cycling for 5 years

added 100 lbs of new live rock from local fish store as well as 3 bags of sand

tank has been running for 5 days with 4 damsels and levels are


ph 8.2

Ammonia =0.25

nitrate #2 =0.00

nitrate #3 =0.00

Phospahte =0.25

has tank cycled since i transferred over live rock and sand filter is new

any amount of ammonia or nitrite means that your tank is still cycling.

It is also considered harmful to cycle a tank with fish. Ammonia poisoning is a hard way to go for fish. I would suggest taking them out until after the cycle has completed. You can add a frozen shrimp to the tank to cycle it instead.

Well any sign of ammonia means you are going through a cycle. It could be your sand or rock or even a tank itself. Since you have some establish live rock your cycle shouldn't be really long one. Keep measuring ammonia and nitrite and do WC.
Also read about damsels more... they are not recommended fish to have.

I think it depends on the breed of damsel...some are extremely aggressive and will stand up to any fish that isn't a predator. Others seem very docile and even skiddish of other fish.
