To Reef Central Canister filters can be used successfully on a reef, though they absolutely need regular maintenance to ensure they run efficiently as the can get gunked up fairly quickly. What intimidates you about a sump?

If you can do it, a sump will be much easier in the long run. It gives you a place to hid heaters and reactors. Keep reading stickies and asking questions. They don't need to be complicated.
Welcome and best of luck |

+1 Reefmedic...you can definitely use a canister filter, but they will be high maintenance.
Think of a sump as a big overflow tank...It will collect all the extra water when your return pump turns off. If you have the chance, go take a look a LFS show tank or another reefers tank to get a good idea of how they work.

I would like to add, having a sump allows room for you to hide most of the equipment i.e. heater, skimmer, ect.., allowing more room in your display tank. It also increases the total water volume of your system which equates to a more stable system.
