Skimmers can take a week or two to really start producing skim..give it some time

Forgive my ignorance, I have often heard that skimmers take time to break in. What would cause it to take time to break in? I have 4 tanks and have never bought a brand new skimmer so I haven't had that experience. I just plug them in and they go :-)

It's just the process of the oils and stuff from the manufacturing process wearing off and the biofilms accumulating on the skimmer. These oils keep the bubbles from forming. You will usually notice the same thing if you do a deep cleaning. But a week or more seems crazy. My LifeReef started skimming into the cup in a matter of 12 hours. By 24 it was skimming like a champ. Is the long break in time a result of these needle wheel skimmers?

A week does seem long, just need enough time for a biofilm coating to form. Unless your water is super clean to start, shouldn't take more than a few days. Even after a full breakdown and clean it only took a couple days to skim, in fact cleaning it helped form a more stable foam head.
