A controllable fish trap baited with raw shrimp and a little patience will allow him to be removed. Your LFS may want him?

What would they use him for? Will he kill crabs?

Many people keep mantis shrimp in a species only tank.

Cool... Kind of like my tank is right now... I have a small crab problem... I have been setting traps and just feeding to get them used to it trying to catch them... I hope if I leave this guy in there a little while longer he'll take care of it.

Today is the first time we have ever seen him out of his rock....

If you have pest crabs I'd leave it in there and watch the pain it unleashes.

Exactly. They are very interesting, intelligent animals. If I had a tank I would enjoy keeping one.

I have considered a mantis tank since I have had a lot of experience with various kinds during my diving days. Fascinating animals.

Yes, they are both interesting and beautiful. They do have very powerful strikers so care is in order.

I do not know, but I tend to favor acrylic in any case. However, I have never heard of a case where they broke glass.

they definitely can. one of my friends works at the atlantic city aquarium, and their employees said they had a peacock mantis that broke like 3 tanks.

In my experience, and many others, Mantis shrimp do not break glass. Many of the instances where aquarium ruptures/cracks/seal breaks occur are from problems already attributed to the tank (worn seals, old glass, pre-existing scratch or fissure). I have owned may Mantis shrimp and enjoy keeping them. very personable inverts! Just keep him in a new species only glass aquarium and he will be fine.
