Does size matter?

So I'm debating on if I should do a 120g (48x24) or a 125 (72x18).

Anyone have a preference and why? I'm leaning towards the 125 to provide more lengthy swimming space (especially for tangs), but that also for my visual perception and doing something with depth probably has benefits as well for the fish.

Thoughts?

For a fish only tank I would lean towards the 125 for as you stated more swimming room and it seems to create more "territory" for the fish to stake out. For corals depth (front to back) is a big deal and the 120 would be an easy choice. You need that front to back room to display corals and give them room to grow.

I am going to do corals in the tank. I'm saying I am not going to get crazy with them but I also know their addicting.

Agreed the depth is important because you will need room for your rock work.

I have a 120g, I think it is perfect for a mixed reef.

Everyone says they wont go crazy with corals until they make they're first purchase and then its like crack you just cant stop.

By the way I love my 4 foot 120.

I also have a 120g, and it has been one of my favorite tank sizes. 18" front to back is good to work with, but the difference is very noticeable once you jump up to a 24" deep tank.
But if tangs are a high priority....18" is more than workable. Out of curiosity....are you against a 180g tank? It would not be all that far off cost wise for filtration, flow and lighting from the 125 and has the best of both tanks. Just a thought Sorry if I just made the decision more complicated

An alternative that would allow the best of both is a 72x24x21 (155 gal) or 72x24x24 (180 gal). Doesn't take any more to light those than the 125, not much cost difference and you have room to aquascape and raise coral and lots of territory for fish. The 6" width difference between the 125 and 155 makes a big difference.

I like a nice 120.
Two stuck together is even nicer.

Do the 180. Best of both worlds.

I went with a 5ft 150 and if I can ever afford to get a bigger tank it will definitely be at least 30 inches wide

I love my 125 but if I had to do it all over again it would definitely be a 180
