Adding critter during cycle

In the middle of cycling my tank....wondering if it is ok to add a crab or something while the bacteria are growing?

Amonia is low around 2ppm, nitrites very low and no nitrates yet.

Ideally would like to add a brittle star or hermit crab

I thought it was common to add creatures/fish during the cycling stage?

setup is 55 gallon tank with sump, liverock and live sand, a few days into cycling. Tank was sitting for 2 months as I didn't realize I had to add amonia to start the cycle...

It is common practice to add livestock during the cycle, but not fish friendly. There are other ways to start your cycle rather then putting livestock in.

Cycle is already started. If Amonia is at 2ppm that will be toxic to a hermit crab or snail?

Back before I knew better I cycled my first tank with blue damsels. I wouldn't do it again, they weren't to happy.

I wouldn't add anything unless it was already dead.

It used to be common practice, now we know there are better and more humane ways of cycling. Wait till you've cycled and then you can add some animals. How much liverock do you have? As for an ammonia source you can toss in a small uncooked shrimp from the seafood counter. You can also use pure ammonia, not sure on the amount but I think it's included in the stickys at the top of this forum. I used the shrimp method.

2ppm can be toxic to any marine animal. I would just wait til your cycle is finished to add any livestock. The few weeks you have left will go by fast you will see.

I'm doing a fishless cycle with pure amonia, just wondering if I could add in something to look at.

Crabs are pretty hardy and it doesn't seem like amonia at 2ppm would have an effect on them?

I was in your shoes a few months back. So i know how hard it is to wait it out lol. Do you have a QT set up? If you do you can start your QT of a fish this way you have something to look at!

What's a QT?

Not adding fish just an octopus eventually.

patience my friend i cycled my 90g with 100lbs of live rock from an established tank I used 40 lbs of live sand and i dosed seachem stability and my tank fully cycled in 2 weeks I waited another 2 weeks before i put any life in it. I tested my water ever 2 days and on that 14th day and ammonia and nitrites was 0 and nitrates was 20 I did a 20% water change and I had zeros across the board. some people oppose dosing to cycle but it worked out great for me.

no. You should complete the cycle, then quarantine a fish for 4 weeks, and also have crabs and worms and snails in the tank preparing the sandbed for those 4 weeks. Don't rush things. It takes time for bacteria to make more bacteria...

Have you been on the cephalopod forums?

What species octo are you getting? I kept an octo through it's lifespan once. Hit me up if you have any Qs.

There are also some good resources in the cephalopod forums. That's where I learned a lot back in the day.

I didn't think it was all that difficult. I actually had an easier time and better success with my bimac than I had with pretty much any other aquatic critter I've kept through the years.

As to the plants. I can't say.

Good luck with the octo, you'll really enjoy it.

Plants suck up nitrates and ammonia so it a cycle can't be toxic to them right?
