Vortech MP40 sound

Ok, I've been adjusting this bad boy for about 4 days. I had the spacer between the motor/magnet set to my glass .. same noise .. removed that spacer for the thicker glass, same result (still have pad between it). I've aligned, realigned, everything ..

When it goes to full speed (100%) during reef crest, it's pretty noisy. This clip makes it sound more like a vibration, but it's really not. If I adjust the wrong way, it certainly vibrates. Just turned it down to max 80% in Apex ..

Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lK5v...ature=youtu.be

Sound about right?

Running the 40 above about 75% or so and it does get a bit loud.

It takes about 2 weeks to break in, then the sound will be hardly noticeable.

Ok, I'll keep an eye on it. Going to stop playing with it. I do have a question .. the little plastic spacer thing that you put on for thickness of glass, how does that really work? Mine is at 1/2 inch.

Poppycock! I have five of them and the motor sounds have not changed one bit from 'breaking in'.

They certainly wind up when they go to 100% on reef crest. We have the tank in our main entrance way, high ceilings, etc. If nothing else is on in the house, you can easily hear them. Looking to add another .. but hoping this one quiets down just a tad.

The noise issue is my one complaint with the MP pumps. While I do believe they quiet down a little over time (or do we just get used to the noise?), I never run mine over 75%. I'm not sure if that holds true for the MP-60's, but for the 10's and 40's, there is a noticable increase in noise above 75%.

I have 2 mp 40.. motor makes some noise on full power but not too annoying.. one rattles and that drives me crazy... you can adjust but then it starts rattling the next day.. I think somethings wrong with the wet side or maybe the motor is off balance.

The MP-40 is designed to work with a certain amount of magnetic force acting upon the wet side. Since glass thickness varies (due to different size tanks, etc), the spacer is used to attain the appropriate amount of space between the dry side magnets and wet side magnets.

Just changed my profile to max 75% on reefcrest. I will see how that goes. I guess if it helps, I will keep it at 75%. Will also have 2, eventually, on opposite ends of tank.
