New Candy Cane/Trumpet Coral Not Doing Well (with picture)

ey Everyone,

A couple days ago I purchased a Candy Cane/Trumpet coral with three heads. In the previous tank it was doing great and looked very large. I put it in my tank (with proper drip acclimation) and it's very shriveled and I haven't noticed any tentacles during the night hours. It has medium flow and is 2/3 the way up my tank. I have dual T5 HO lighting. The picture is below.

How long has it been in, and are there other corals in this tank?

Candy Canes don't like a lot of light, so you could try moving it down in your tank to see if that helps.

A couple of days might not be enough to assess the coral's acclimation to your tank, some corals take a few weeks to open up under new tank conditions.

But, here's something you might try - wait until an hour after lights out (with no moonlight - tank should be dark). Then add the "juice" from some thawed Mysis shrimp, and check the coral about 30-45 minutes afterward. Mine responds very vigorously to the presence of Mysis; though it takes 30 minutes for the polyps to fully open, and it only occurs during dark tank conditions.

how many t5s and what size?

If you have other corals which are doing well.... don't be too concerned too quickly. A candy cane was one of my first frags. At the time, being new to corals, I thought... oh neat... a candycane w/ a riccordea on it... that's two frags for one! In retrospect, bad call, as the ric stung the heck out of the candycane until I finally separated them. Since this, the candycane has moved spots several times to accomodate other frags, and moved tanks once also. It's taken over a year... but my candy cane is finally looking good again, and starting to grow.

IME it's a very hardy coral, and also slow to respond to new conditions. Give it some time to adjust.... unless there's something really wrong with your parameters, it won't go south too quickly.
