Question Sump Help PLEASE!!!

hi i am currently downsizing my 60 to a 29 cube. my 60 currently doesnt have a sump because the stand is a p.o.s. and cant fit one... i found a tank/stand that i want to get and put a sump in so tat i can hide my skimmer heater etc...
my question is will it work if i do this...

buy a canister filter and have it suck water from the display and down into the sump. then have a seperate pump return the water back into the display? ive thought about it and the only problem i can think of is will one pump work faster than the other and mess things up? for example too much water being put into the sump and the sump flooding !?!?! please give suggestions and things that i will need! thank you!

Why a canister filter? You are over complicating things by adding it to your sump. If your tank isn't drilled, just use an overflow.
