Help me understand this.

Just returned after a long 10 day trip. Left the tank in the hands of Apex and a house sitter. When I returned today without any attention to the tank for 10 days other than feeding....everything looked great! Didn't change my feeding amount. Had the skimmer running and emptying in to a 5 gallon bucket. The only thing different I can think of is I removed my filter socks of course.

My SPS color has improved significantly, several zoa colonies have added more polyps than they have in the last two months and my duncan has some crazy polyp extension. My diatom problem (which was already improiving) has dissappeared and the only visible algae growth is film algae on the glass. Of course I never go 11 days without cleaning the glass so I don't know if that's any different or not.

Makes me wonder if I need to practice a little more benign neglect! Of course I haven't checked my parameters yet but will later this evening.

I'd have to say filter socks. How often did you change or clean them prior to this?

Every 2-3 days. Hardly ever overflowed. That really is the only variable I can come up with. My parameters haven't changed.

pH 8.25-8.35
Alk 9.0 kH
Cal 440
Mg 1400
Nitrate 5
PO4 0.02

hahaha

I have heard advice about limiting how often you put hands in your tank. less likely to introduce random toxins from hand soaps and lotions etc, less stress on inhabitants (giant monster hand sin my house would stress me out tbh), and less likely you will get some weird skin infection or toxin poisoning

That being said, i constantly fiddle with stuff in my tank.

I know how that is lol, it's hard for me to not stick my arm in my tank at least once a day. Probably never a day has gone by without my hand making its way in the tank

I keep cloths under my tank. That should tell you something.
I do try not to mess with things too much... I have odd hobbies and probably odd stuff on my hands. Plus, my pistol shrimp freaks out and shoots me. Kind of stings.
