Garden hose safe or not?

Will a standard green garden hose work for my topoff water coming from basement? There is no metal fittings they have been cut off. I've searched on here but everyone says the brass fittings will be a problem. I wonder if mine will be an issue or leach over time?

Not reef safe, most of the garden hoses have nasty rubbers and petrolium based crap that leaches out, bad for your tank. an RV drinking water hose would be ok if it's rated for potable water but I'd not risk it, just get vinyl, PEX, PVC, or LDPE tubing, no more expensive than a garden hose (except that you already had the garden hose)

Agreed. No bueno on the hose, even without the metal. If you were to test the TDS after going through that hose, I bet you would be shocked.

In fact, I am try that just for funsies

Ahh, true that. I should have known. Can not be too much copper however because they certainly foul on the bottom of boats in through hulls. Well actually, they are bronze, not brass, much lower zinc.

But, to the point, no metal, thanks.

Well this has me nervous now. I did do a TDS test and there is no change from my RO container and what comes through hose. Both were reading 1. I still may change hose out for something better like the RV hose that was mentioned or clear tubing. I have read that tubing should be the one to use. It's hard not to use what is on hand you know.

You can pick up the hose used for ice makes for around $5 at home depot, much safer and very durable

What about pumping RO/DI water. Do most of you guys just connect the filter to the hose or directly from the faucet?

I Tapped into my household plumbing. You could tap into the plumbing underneath the sink with the kit that brs sells. You def should not use the hose, bc it will leach nasty things into the water if not immediately, it will over time killing your tank!

I use garden hose for water changes and stuff. I have for years. I would not use them on the tank all of the time. I use the high end contractor ones that are 100 feet and resist kinking and stuff - I cut the ends off and use 3/4" barbed fittings on the pumps.

I have heard all of the supposed contaminants and issues without much actual evidence, and while I am sure that some have this problem, lots of people (especially in the freshwater world where chems are just as dangerous) use these hoses to move water short term.
