greetings/possible cyano outbreak
greetings fellow reefers..
as this is my first post, it comes as an introduction as well as a problem to deal with... the beginning outbreak as what I feel is a cyano or red slime outbreak on my sandbed.. tank has cycled and is in its 7th week, 90g with 30g sump, no refugium, sump has rock in it, danner mag 9.5, Corlalife 220G super skimmer,..Odysea 716 250w MH Advance plus lighting System, GFO/Carbon setup with MJ1200 pump, Odysea 36W sterilizer tank inhabitants.. large frogspawn, three RBTs, nice pair mated Black Perculas, 1 damsel, very small still... approx. 70 lbs BRS dry live rock figi* 80lbs figi pink sand, ( runs 2+ to minus 2 inches throughout) sump has approx.15-20 lbs rock. good assortment of a CUC. all of the tank is very healthy. In the last maybe 10 days, Im seeing a streaking of what starts as a brown sand streaking,at the furthest edge of the high flow of the tank, but at the beginning of that high flow area, through midway,it is turning redishbrown,to a maybe purple red with a light coating of fine hair beginning to build up on it. this would be in an open area at the front of the tank, easily accessible, maybe 4-5inches wide by 18 - 22 inches long. of multiple streaks IM wondering, since it is easily accessible, should I just remove it and refill that area with new aragonite figi pink ? I realize this will start my tank into a partial recycle ( maybe? ) really Im unsure where to go with this... I would rather eliminate it, than treat and fight a drawn out process....BUT I will rely on the recommendations, of those who are far more advanced than I..( heck, really anyone is thank you for any advice... IM much better @ rebuilding old Harleys than reef keeping oh yes..I have a RO/DI system... using Red Sea Coral Salt Last edited by Debevec; 07/07/2014 at 11:46 AM. |

Is that 3 RBT(rose bubble tip anemones)? Get your alkalinity to the proper level and keep it stable.
You've added a pretty decent bio load to a very young tank. Be patient and let your tank catch up. Keep an eye on ammonia and nitrites and don't do anything drastic unless they get out of line. A tank that young is going to have some algae outbreaks. |

yes 3 rose bubble tips....the third one was just added last night...one of the RBT's is for when my sons ( also 90g tank) finishes his cycle..
and thank you for the quick reply... I have assumed** it was due to bio load being added in rather quickly, but the RBTs were two given to me( very nice ones at that) and the third as noted above.. today ammonia is very level at just above detactable, nitrites are at 0 nitrates spiked again this past week at around 40...PH is at 8.2... salinity is @ .25. I just received my Hanna alkalinity tester, and will give it a shot to see where its also at. |
