Current HOB Skimmer Problem

I have a used skimmer that I recently discovered is manufactured by Current. I think it might be a pretty old model. Last night it suddenly started overflowing the cup while we slept. Luckily it hangs over my top off bucket so it didn't make a mess but it dumped nearly 3 gallons of freshwater into my system over night via the ATO.

Today, no matter how I try, I cannot get the adjuster to cut back the flow or adjust the size of bubbles to stop overflowing the cup within an hour. In the past its never half filled the cup in four days! Now the skimmate is practically water when generally its black tea colored.

There is no way to take this beast apart. I've checked all the connections and even replaced the hose to the pump. Since it's an HOB I don't think water height is the problem but I've ensured there is no extra water in my system all to no avail.

Should I declare this thing DOA?

Current Tank Info: A work in progress...

I cannot believe it! After fighting with this skimmer for the entire day I accidentally discovered that if I shim the entire skimmer so that it is no longer level I can control how far the bubbles come up the neck. I don't understand how or why that works...it never used to be this way but heck if it gets me through until Tuesday I'll take it!
