165 Watt LED on Nano?
I currently have a 10G Nano that has been running for about 50 days. I currently have 2x Par38 Lights (Only 5 LED's Per Bulb) and I am just not seeing any growth. All my parameters are in check before someone asks.
I have multiple frags of zoas and lps since I started and nothing has grown, no new polyps ect.. everything opens up very nice, but thats about it. I was going to upgrade my lights to a quad t5 light until I saw the 165 watt chinesee LED Reef lights on ebay for $90 shipped. After doing checks and watching youtube vids, they look way worth the money. Do you think my tank would be able to handle the lowest settings on this fixture as my coral acclimate to the new light? |

If you hang it from the ceiling..
Way too much light I'd think.. How many whats do you have on it, 5x3w in the PAR38's? So 30w? |

Before you upgrade your lights, even though zoas grow "fast" I would say unless you have a high nutrient tank just for them, it'll only grow 1-2 polyps a month, which atleast i do not notice. Also, depending on the LPS, it could be the same. I would recommend feeding your LPS and zoas before you buy new lights.
I don't think it's not enough lights... That 165 watt is made for 40+ gallon tanks, not 10... |

What type of Par 38 lights? If they are anything decent such as Rapidled or Ecoxotic then they are already overkill for a 10g.
I would say its much more likely that you havnt seen growth because of the age of the tank. 50 days is only about 7 weeks. Considering an initial cycle usually takes 4-6 weeks your tank is very young. If you put the frags in before the cycle was complete the ammonia and nitrate levels could have stressed them out and will delay growth. Also take into account that frags take a while to settle in and recover from movement. This can vary greatly but its very common to see new frags stay closed for up to a week before even opening. I had some zoas that i put in an established tank that didnt grow any new polyps for a couple months. I would recommend just waiting and watching. Make sure to monitor levels and keep things stable and you should see growth eventually. |

I just got my 165w chinese LED's and they recommend them for a 24x24" area. So probably overkill but they are dimmable so it could work. I have my old blue and white aluminum block. Needs some LED's repaired but ive been running it for months. pm me if your interested.

To be honest if you go with those lights you must take in consideration of how high you mount the light if the lenses are fogged or clear and if it's dimmable I would highly recommend a full spectrum with if possible uv and dimmable your possible growth issues may be lack of dosing the right things I know my zoos started growing better when I messed with alkalinity such as a 2 part calcium alk but also iodide and simple vitamins and trace elements or even a quality for like phytoplankton

I'm not sure the wattage. I got them 2nd hand. I would assume they are 5x 3watt each, for a total of 30watts. I also have a 3watt solar flare (Blue) that I run for sunrise / set. I feed my candy canes mysis on wens / sunday - frogspawns on the same day. I shoot the excess fluid at the zoas (if it does anything)
My Monti cap looks great with white around the rim (assume) it is growing. I do a 15% wc weekly. I only have 1 fish in the tank. Water is crystal clear and all looks good, just no growth. Coraline algae is exploding everywhere. |
