PLEASE! Help (sump experts) situation
Ok so I have a 29 gallon rimless cube that's been running for 9 months, 30-35 pounds of live rock, currently just running a hob with purigen, poly, the ceramic biomaxx, and a sponge. Was running a canister until last week because it was just a nitrate factory. So I have a big issue, I can only fit a 10 gallon sump in the stand. It is in my living room so I do not want to do a hob skimmer, plus I already got the eshopps psk-75 which has an extremely small base (foot). Now the problem is that I want to do a refugium/skimmer in the same sump and am running into an issue UNLESS I run it with the return and skimmer in the last chamber together, which I've also read is a no no (but has been done). The first chamber is where the sock will be and if the skimmer is in there with it, it leaves not too much space for the return chamber, which I read drains the quickest so I would like to leave some space for that. I was told by my LFS that I can run the skimmer and return in the last section after the fuge. I've seen people do this pretty simply on YouTube Where the skimmer is in the first chamber then fuge then return The way it should be , BUT they weren't using a sock..... Now the reason for the fuge/sump/skimmer Is because I'm having sky high nitrates And I'm not over feeding and all other readings are fine. I was reading that the skimmer taking out copepods etc wouldn't be my main concern because the reason I'm doing it in the first place is for the nitrates. Any input or comments , please feel free. I already got baffles cut , Enough for one bubble trap Here is a pic with the skimmer and return in the same section and here is one with the skimmer right up again the sock holder thing AND last , here is an ideal 10 gallon sump/refugium with a skimmer that I found On youtube, but he isn't using a sock which saved him all that room. This also confused me because then where is the food n particles going after being brought into the sump . Like I said , any Info would be appreciated. Thank you

Or would it just be the smartest to go back and get a 15 gallon, it would add 4" which would be significant but I would just have to move the tank out from the corner a few more inches

The problem with the skimmer in with the return is that the level in that chamber is going to fluctuate effecting the skimmer. Unless you have an auto top off to keep adding water to that chamber to keep a constant level, still probably not the best idea. The skimmer is best used in the first or middle chamber.

My only problem I run into with this, Is that the first chamber won't have room for the sock holder plus the skimmer. Should I just go without the sock so that the skimmer can go in the first chamber? I'm in the process of building the sump and didn't put the baffles in yet, I was thinking maybe making the a small first section for drain only like 2-3" with egg crate for filter floss... I'm not a sump expert by any means. Does this sound like something that would work? |
