Exclamation Should I paint this reef stand?

Well, I've picked up a stand and canopy for a 90 gallon that is going to be set up as a sps reef. Right now it is a sort of Cherry stain color, but I think that it will look better painted white as it will match the white bookcase opposite in the room and the white fireplace. However, the wife thinks that I shouldn't paint it. Some other unbiased opinions would be great!

I think you would be fine either way. It doesn't look bad the color it is. Do you have any furniture in the room like a hutch or table. I would go with what ever those are. I think if it was white there would be way to much white on that side

Depends on how it looks in person compared to the flooring.

Side note, I like the fireplace and brick work. I'd probably remove the paint though for a nice contrast to the room. Don't see old brick like that in houses these days. Or at least out in California.

Interior design is all about conscious repetition of patterns/colors/shapes/etc. Every element needs to relate to at least one or two other elements in the room. For the aquarium to fit in as is, I'd add some more natural wood pieces to the room.

I'm normally a big fan of painting furniture but I'm afraid if white overload on that side of the room...

Better to just listen to the wife on this one imo.

+1 see if you can add 1 more piece of natural wood (cherry or cherry color) to match the tank. Maybe paint the fireplace mantle to match the tank???

+1 painting the stand white will be "white overload"

my 0.02

I agree ..replace the mantle (don't paint it) with a nice piece of wood to match. A new mantle will make your room nicer, tank in there or not.

This would be the correct course of action (always). Happy wife = happy life.

I'm a bit biased because it pains me greatly when someone wants to put a layer of paint on a nice piece of wood. I think it looks fine in there as is. If anything, all the white would drive me crazy.

you should realize the mere fact that your wife allows your tank in your living room puts you ahead of the game...dont make waves...i think there's too much white in there already...be thankful she doesnt want you to strip the fireplace too...mine thinks live rock is ugly and cant understand why i wont set up the tank with bleached coral like i did in the 70's

Thanks for all the replies! We've decided to not paint the stand/canopy

Looks fine to me,however you may want to take this time to move things around in there. Once the tank if full of water it's game over!
