Nothing except an ATS packs the same power into a much smaller package.

I tried building an ATS without success, my current tank has a low bioload and an oversized skimmer, and sump. Tank relied on only rock for filtration for some time and hair algae formed. But now I haven't seen hair algae in the tank since I installed an the skimmer.

Skimmer seems very important if you ask me, but that another debate.

How was "success" defined when you had built your ATS?
