It looks like a juvenile Tripletail. Where did you even get one??
Treat it like a large grouper. In the wild they can grow to over 2.5 feet and are quite beefy- 30 to 40 pounds. Likely to eat everything in their path.

LMAO!!! I agree, I think it is a Juvi Tripletail!!! Making the, "Do your research", advice in the signature line of the op even more amusing.

They're a fun, aggressive and tenacious sport fish down here in Tampa Bay. Delicious too. Maybe after he eats everything in your tank you can keep feeding it and have a nice meal yourself. Albeit a pretty expensive meal.

Genius buy OP... I'm sure you don't have a tank large enough for the fish as it is let alone when it's 2.5ft and eating everything. The fact you bought something you had no idea what it was just dumbfounds me

Sweet, 800 gallons... I would love to see your setup, Got a pic?

No offense, but you're still contradicting yourself. You state, "RESEARCH each indiviudual species you INTEND to own", but then you say,

So basically, you're not practicing what you preach. Getting a fish, whether it was free or not, still requires that you find out A) What it is. B) Will it even survive in captivity. C) What type of environment does it require. D) Can you actually provide that environment to the animal. E) What does it eat. Clearly you have done the opposite by acquiring the animal and now your trying to find out the answers to the aforementioned questions.

My advice to you is to offer it to a Public Aquarium that may already have the knowledge and capabilities to care for it. Look, I love Gag Groupers, Snook, Dorado, Red Snappers, etc... and TripleTails too, but I don't intend on ever putting a sport fish in a home aquarium.

And for anyone else reading this, let this be a lesson. Answer the above questions before you even consider acquiring an animal, even if it's free.

Again, don't take offense, we all make mistakes, the key is learning from them.

Might have been good to mention the 800 gallon tank and the fact is was a give me to start with. Kind of changes the scenario everyone is thinking of fish that is going to be an eating machine that grows into a monster fish being put in a small tank
