Day 71 Fallow
Just had to share my excitement to see the number 71 on my calendar today. I can hardly wait to add my fish back to my display tomorrow after 72 days absence to eradicate ICH.
If you aren't using a QT and get Ich in your display you are going to be heartbroken by the losses and the extended fallow period. Keeping all your fish in QT for such an extended period is not easy and it's not fun. Please people, believe me, setting up a simple QT is so much easier and cheaper than replacing your livestock. Is it tomorrow yet???

We all know the proper procedures, but it is so tempting to cut corners! Until you experience a disease first hand it’s hard to understand the how bad the emotional strain of dealing with the results can truly be.

In my defense, I did not know better when I got my tank. I never had a QT for my freshwater fish...but wish I had this time...it's an eye opener starting a SW tank. I had NO IDEA how important it was and hope that some new people will learn faster than I did.

That's great. Did all of your fish make it through the fallow period in QT?

Congrats on the patience and discipline to take it the whole 72 days! How tempting it must have been after 60 days to risk it...

Good luck. I went through it years ago. It's fun to buy a fish and put them right in the tank but not for long in most cases.

Day 68 here. I think I'll wait until day 73. ;-)
All seriousness, from what I can tell from reading the prevalence of disease is higher now than it was 15 years ago. Or maybe it's my imagination.

I woke up at 5 a.m. I was so excited but had to wait until 7 a.m. for the lights to come on and feed the fish their last meal in QT. I lost my Flame Angel in QT early on. I had already put the tank through 8 weeks fallow and it was not long enough because the fish got sick again. So at this point my fish have been out of the tank longer than they were ever in it. It's been frustrating but I believe because of it I learned a great deal more about my coral.

ah, yes, the ole "silver lining".
sorry you lost your angel. do you think qt was just too stressful or did ich get him in the end?

I think the Ich took out the Angel. They seem to me to be a little on the fragile side and TTM was too much in it's weakened state. I have a new one in TTM now which will go into the QT on Tuesday.

Congrats on sticking with your QT and fallow regimen. Your reefing enjoyment will be much better not having to worry about illness.

All the fish in the DT seem to be doing fine, exploring and defining their territories. The One Spot seems to be having the most trouble adapting, of course, ducking in and out of hidey holes; in and out of his pajamas. They are the most stressed fish I've ever seen and if this one succumbs I won't replace it. Only two more flips for the fish in TTM and they look great and are eating.

Same thing happened to me when i first started. I still don't at but I have all of the fish I need so I guess I beat it. While waiting for ich to die out I just did upgrades to my equipment and stuff.

Fish can harbor Ich in their gills where it's not visible. If they live in an appropriate environment, stress free, with a good diet they can live a pretty normal life even though they are still sick. But if anything happens to stress the fish, or you add a new fish, some or all of the fish can break out again and it's likely that at least some might die. I'm glad you are having good luck with it. I really wanted to get the Ich out of my display and time will tell if I was successful. If I messed it up...I doubt that I will go fallow again.

As for quarantine I did not really have a good place for a qt tank at my old house so I just winged it. Luckily everything was good and still is.

I ran the tank fallow for 8 weeks after putting the fish through TTM and as soon as I put the fish back in the tank they got sick again. 8 weeks was not long enough without a fish host.
