I have a 125 (undrilled) and want a sump/refugium and need some help on everything I need to make this work. I really like the Aqueon Model 4 but not sure about the rest.

Aqueon Proflex model 4 (Or could I get away with a 3)?
What pump and size do I need?
What overflow should I get and do I need 1 or 2?
I plan on using it as a refugium as above....
A good recommended protein skimmer.....

I would suggest that if you can drill your tank, you do it. Hang-on overflows can easily malfunction and create a very costly flood. The proflex sums are, IMHO a very efficient and practical product. I could have easily built a sump for a litle less money, but the proflex offered everything I needed in a small, easy to install package.

As for which model to go with, I'd suggest you get the largest possible sump you can fit. You can't to too large, but if it's too small, you wasted your money. Also, take the time to fill the sump outdoors for at least overnight to detect leaks. I have already read a few people's posts that they received a leaking sump. Defects happen, but I still think it's an excellent product.

I built an external overflow for my tank and modded the sump to run a triple overflow (Bean Animal's Silent and Failsafe Overflow) and drilled the sump to run the return pump externally. Here is a lik to my tank thread on my local forum if you care to see how I did it. It's rather long and the first 2/3 of the story is about past tanks, but the last 1/3 is dedicated to my current tank's build with the proflex model1:

GL & let us know which route you go and how it turns out.

Also, for those of you having an issue with the adjustable wall - look at my thread (link on post above) and notice I put a piece of eggcrate on top of the fuge section - the original intended purpose was to keep the macroalgae from overflowing into the third chamber but it conveniently also serves to hold up the adjustable wall. When I shut off the pumps for maintenance, I don't have to hassle at all with it.

Hey TRENT I realize it was a long time ago you posted about the Proflex Model 4 sump, but I had a question for you if you can test your memory. I also have this sump and want to run a refugium, but how did you end up putting the skimmer in the last chamber and not cause micro bubbles?

I'm looking to a model 1 for my 54 corner. How does everyone like their sump?

Did you figure out how to get rid of the micro bubbles, as I am having the same issue.

I had the model 1 and just got rid of it. I liked the design but there are a few issues I couldn't get around.

The refugium area was too small to grow enough macro algae to consume any significant nutrients.

I then decided to try the berlin method and I couldn't find a decent internal skimmer to fit in either the return area of the second chamber.

I had a HOB Aquamaxx HOB skimmer that hung on the side and I used tubing to return to the 2nd chamber to prevent micro-bubbles in the display tank.

I ended getting a sump custom built to similar dimensions. My current sump uses the entire area as a refugium which I'm already seeing a reduction in nitrates and I still have the HOB skimmer.

Attached is a photo of the old configuration. (I shut off my return pump when feeding so the rubber band is used to keep the baffle in place.)

Aqueon Proflex sump and pump?

I bought it at BulkReefSupply, I think that size is 1/2 inch tubing. I got the connectors and other pipings at HomeDepot in the plumbing isle.

I see other places, including my HomeDepot selling the tubing but the BRS one was great quality.

It gives more flexibility in terms of plumbing.

No issues, I heated the tubing and stretched it over some of the piping the used clamps to secure it.

Ok I have question regarding this sump

I have the model 3, and I have come across some post where people are putting the skimmer in the middle chamber and the fuge in the 3rd split witht he return.

Is there any thing that makes it better to put the skimmer in the center?

If I tune my ato, I should be able to get the skimmer to stay in the 3rd section and not worry about water levels?
