It eventually will go back down, but after it goes how high? It's not healthy for the tank, bottom line. Think, if you can smell it outside of the tank, think what the water is like for the fish and other inhabitants in the tank. I would get the rock out asap and do a water change immediately after.

If you have a sump, and if it fits put the rock in there, in case you don't have a second tank.

Haha sorry I knew it had something to do with a 22 caliber. But still something moving that fast can do some damage, agreeably not as much as people think but still a very impressive feat of nature |

Yeah I would say that might get rid of the mantis but not good if you have anything else in there

If you were me, would you do WC at this stage?
100% WC? 50% WC? or neither? Just for my understanding, I thought the more food (ammonia) there is for the bacteria to eat, the more beneficial bacteria I will grow onto that surface of rock? I could definitely be wrong here but just want to understand the logic behind it. My initial thought was to never do WC because of this. |

I had one and set up a trap for it. Trap worked and found one of those strange people that wanted one.
Cut the top off from a 1 liter soda bottle, turn it around and insert into bottle and tape it so it funnels in. Put some food (piece of shrimp)v in set on sand bed.

Just let it keep going in the bucket, don't change the water just yet..
if it were me that's what I'd do.

Dead mantis in the rock, alright.
If it happens again, trap it out instead. No sense in slowly killing a critter just for turning up where it isn't supposed to be.

Its a shame they have such an undeserved bad reputation as there is no need to kill such an intelligent species. |
