To Peninsula or not?

I have been looking around at larger aquariums for when I move into a new home. I have always just assumed I would go with a "regular" style aquarium but I have noticed a lot of really nice peninsula reefs lately. What are some of the pros and cons with these compared to a "regular" aquarium.

Note that all plumbing will be in the basement/separate room.

i just set up a 65g peninsula in my main room of my apt. The only things different that I noticed was that i could only have powerheads on one side, which wasn't a problem for me. just dropped one jebao rw8 in on else mode and the whole tank is rocking.

other than that, dealing with running the wires all to the one side was mildly annoying.

it's actually pretty neat being able to see the tank from all sides, and being able to place frags on all sides of the rocks. also makes the tank seem a little smaller. but all in all i'm really happy i went peninsula

I love peninsula's. What I like the most is that you can essentially walk around them and have 3 great viewing panes. Mine is built in and it divides my living room and home office.

What a beautiful tank! What type of pumps do you use to get flow at the opposite end of the reef?

On the far side I have two Tunze 6205's pointing towards the end of the tank. There is also a Koralia 1400 creating additional surface agitation. There is a Tunze 6105 on the overflow facing the same direction as the other Tunzes. I also have a a Reeflo Super Dart Gold for my return pump that returns through a pair of sea swirls opposite of the Tunze's. The Tunze's are controlled by my Apex and I have several profiles the create a wide range of flow and surge effects.

This is a video I took a 3 1/2 years ago of the Tunze 6205's effect on the 8' long tank.

I have always wanted to do one and selected a house floor plan that was perfect for it. It's the best decision I have made in this hobby IMO.

I have my returns run to the far 3ft end. Twin MP40's are on the opposite side which is giving me plenty of flow. My tank was a standard dual corner overflow 270 and I glued in thick glass plates on the bottom and top of the tank to plug the old overflow holes. I also had the LFS make a custom overflow. This saved me about 50% over a custom made tank.

Here is my build thread which was just finished.

Does anyone use a closed loop system in their peninsula?

Pro is 2 long sides for coral and fish. Would love to have one if I had a spot for one.

I do.. I have a Reefflo Dart Gold running my CL with a AquaUV 114 watt UV Sterilizer in line. It draws from the rear of the tank and returns through a manifold that surrounds my central overflow and blows out under the aquascape to insure that nothing settles below that area.
