that's true..

I don't know about other brands.. but my hammerhead shark's magnet is WAY too strong for everyday removal. When they get stuck together, I literally have to use all my wimpy strength to break it apart. Can't even twist them into L shape for easier grip.

i had it snap on my finger a few times.. instant bloody bruise.. I don't mess with that thing now.

If you keep a thin piece of smooth wood between them they are easier to separate.
Make the board bigger than the magnets and that will stop the bloody bruising too.

I've got a FOWLR, and I'm using instant ocean. Does the lack of calcium mean I won't grow coraline?

what are yoiu keeping salt level at? IO mixed at 1.025 should be around 420 calcium.

I'm running reef breeders and I get tons of coraline growth IN THE SHADE; otherwise it grows very little. Fine with me I don't want to scrape my glass every week lol

I have the same issue. My tank has been set up for well over a year. LPS,SPS etc all doing well. What coraline that is there is looking very healthy but I have tried to get it to spread at least a little with no luck. Turn off pumps and scrape existing coraline to let it spread. Moved a rock with it to other side of the tank with no luck either.

Tank is a 180 gal with 3 AI Vega color LED's.My last tank with MH lights grew coraline like crazy

Alk 9.5
Cal 450
Mag 1420
PH 8.32
Sal 1.025
Ntrate/nitrite 0
Phosphate on Hanna checker 0.00

My phosphates were high 0.35 for quite a while but using bio pellets has finally got it down.

What does everyone else do to get it to spread?

From what I've read, heard, and observed, different strains react differently to light. Some will grow in light, and others only in the shadows. Just my 2 pence.

If you take a piece or rock that has good coralline growth and scrub it with a stiff brush in front of a powerhead it might help seed the rest of the tank.

My 3yr old has tried. She can't move the mag scraper. Too hard.

Following up on this thread nearly five months later...my coralline algae growth is crazy. My base rock looks like the 10 yr old rock, my overflow box is completely covered in red, purple, pink, and green coralline, my back glass is covered, my powerheads are caked and I'm forced to dose massive amounts of mag just to keep up with it. I'm setting up another tank soon so as soon as I do I'll be scraping down everything I can (except rocks of course) so that I can get the mag dosing under control. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!

I'm in the same boat with a 175 gallon tank that's about 7 months old now. Still do not have any coralline algae. Only the one live rock I added and it's covered in it (see purple rock in video below). I've done scrapes & brushes off this rock a number of times. I'm running three EcoTech 3G Radions at ~60%.

Water parameters are below:
Temp: ~79*
SG: 1.024
Ph: ~8.1
ORP: ~465
PO4: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: 0
Ca: ~430 ppm
dkH: 7.84
Mg: ~1240

Any ideas?

Tank is a year old; Chinese LEDs, no coralline. I know people don't like scraping it once they get it but I too wish I had some coralline growth. It's just part of the aesthetic of a reef tank and to not have it just seems like something isn't right in the tank. For those who aren't new, or who've been scraping coralline off their walls for years now, think of it as a badge of honor that the rest of us just aren't achieving. lol Read this whole thread; going to start testing Mag and see if that's the issue. It certainly isn't a lack of calcium - as it is I'm probably the only reefer in existence to ever be trying to get my calcium levels to come DOWN!! lol Guess I just need to stock more acros.

Sounds like I should barter my scrapings! Lol. I had build-up on the glass starting at 3 months.

Honestly, there are different strains/varieties/species. Some do better with more light, some do better with low light, etc. If your's is not growing, I'd find someone whose coralline is growing, and get some scrapings from them.
