Should I change skimmers
I recently changed from a 120RR to a 93 cube. Because of the cabinet size I also had to change my sump. I went from an Eshopps RS200 to a 20g long. I estimate my volume of water before live rock to be 100 gallons. I have the rock from the 120 in the 93 cube. I am using the same Reef Dynamic INS150 for the 93 cube. Is this too big of a skimmer for this tank? Should I downsize? It has only been changed over for two weeks. The skimmer appears to be working fine, but I wonder if I run a smaller skimmer if it will pull out more stuff faster vs having to build enough to export.
Any opinions? |

The RD INS 135 is the perfect match for your tank. The INS 150 a rare animal in the RD world, is perfect for a 120. Being that I would keep the 150 until it just gunks up the neck only then I would consider changing it out.
Your last sentence (sorry do not know how to quote like others) is why I do not like to oversize skimmers, you are correct. |

Thanks for the reply. I just ordered a RD Biopellet reactor. I am thinking the effluent to skimmer connection might keep this working for me. I may end up selling it for a smaller skimmer.
I was thinking of the 100, but after reading the web sight a 135 is correct. Anyone want to trade? |

I've always oversized even with the dynamics skimmers. I think you should leave it on the system personally.
Your never going to get what you paid for it (I had an ins135 on my 110 and now running an ins 80 on my 50l),they perform great, and from what I've observed by on forums and experience with other brands, the Rd skimmers are overly and uncommonly adjustable. So I wouldn't sell mine, simply because once your used to a certain level of performance from something, going down just isn't an option.. But thats me.. |

In my opinion..........Over sizing the skimmer is one of the best things you can do for your system.
My skimmer is rated for systems 130gal to 320gal, and my system volume is approx 70-75gal. Last edited by myram; 12/07/2014 at 06:49 PM. |

If I do sell it it would be only to buy another RD skimmer. I have had several other brands this has been the most constant one i have ever had. But I am keeping it for now.
