no baffle sump
I have seen a lot of pictures where people have used the big rubbermaid style tubs as sumps, what about just placing the skimmer inside a tank and putting it up high enough to get it as the correct water level and not using a baffles?
I plan on a separate fuge that will drain into the sump. |

The biggest issue is that as water evaporates, the water level will fluctuate and kill your skimmer. Any skimmer I've ever owned needed a constant water level to perform properly

I've done this before without any problems. The ATO unit that I have allows me to adjust the water level up or down if I need to, not to mention keeping it stable once the sweet spot has been found. Placing the skimmer on some egg crate or something would also work.

It can work. The big advantage to baffles is helping reduce or eliminate the bubbles getting back to the tank.

I recently had to eliminate my baffled sump. I am using a 20 gal aquarium for now with no baffles. Seems to be working just fine. I do not have a bubble problem in my display.

I was thinking of adding some rock into the sump, and I will have a auto top off.
I am just tossing ideas around, trying to use up stuff I already have laying around. |

Yeah it will defiantly work. Like Ryan said, some people never had bubble issues.
