how much sand in the Refugium?

I am setting up my first reef tank with a refugium and I am wondering how deep the sand bed should be in the refugium compartment?

Depends on your goals for that compartment. Nitrate reduction? Pod production?

Your best bet to have both pod production and some nitrate / phosphate reduction in my opinion would be cheato with no sand or rock in the compartment, otherwise it will end up collecting detritus. Remember this is another aspect of the tank that requires care, or else the cheato may die off and put those nutrients back into the system.
