Do Tangs eat macro Algae such as.....?

Do Tangs eat macro algae such as chematorphora? I was reading somewhere that they do.

Or does anyone feed other types of macro's to their tangs?

By the way when the fish nibble at the macro algae such as chematophora and the partial rippings and tears come off and swirl around the tank will they eventually grow or just die?

Well: Yes, Tangs eat macro algae... Not sure about the cheato but I would assume so ... I feed mine Nori... You can get it very cheap at Asian food stores.... Just get the dried or roasted type... It's sushi wrap.... Mine love it and have gotten very fat on it You'll probably find that that's what most folks feed their tangs....

Yep!

If they bite off a piece of chaeto and a bit floats around the tank.. it can grow if there is enough light/nutrients in the water.

I've read they love red graciliara. Plus it looks real nice, though I don't think it anchors into stuff like caulerpa does, so it's probably not a good idea to grow it in your display tank. I have mine growing in the refugium, no fish yet as it's a new tank.

not trying to be a smart a$$, but do bears poop in the woods. Yes tangs will eat just about any type of macro algae, they may prefer a particular type over another but if the only thing being feed is cheato, they will eat it.

Thanks for posting the picture of the graciliara..... I've got a few areas of LR carpeted in that stuff as well as a few patches of calerpa and the tangs keep it pretty trimmed down... I've watched them go to it from time to time... Especially my yellow tang......

i've read that you do not want to give them roasted nori because many of the nutrients the fish need are dipleted due to the cooking.

Some Nori is soaked in tea. Avoid this stuff like the plague.

I've never heard or read that before.... I can tell you that nori is not the only food that my tangs are eating... I also feed brine, mysis, plankton and spectrum pellets..... I can also tell you that all of my tangs are very healthy, fat and active....

I'd be interested in reading anything you could post about the roasted nori versus dried nori...

Mine love the small bubble caulerpa but won't touch the larger bubble variety. They won't touch the pipe cleaner algae either (which really sucks).

My Powder blue, hippo, Tomini and purple tang will munch the chaeto, as well as hair algae (except Tomini). They will NOT touch the caulerpa - thank God for the rabbit fish.

Every tang that I have ever had would eat Nori.

I don't understand people who grow macro in there refugium and then feed it to there tangs. I would think most people grow macro in a refugium to remove phosphates. They feed the macro to tangs and the phosphate goes right back in the tank. I understand if they were eating unwanted macro from the display tank.

Well, tangs have to eat something. I guess you think its better to feed them algae thats processed and dried in sheets rather than the real thing for free that I'm already growing for export purposes? I don't think so.

I would suspect that you would lose something when roasting the Nori. I use plain dried. Check the back of the package, it usually says exactly what it is under the ingredients section.

Some say nothing on the back or it is written in Japanese or Korean. I would avoid these because you do not know what is really in it.

Do you know any macro algae that can co-exists with purple and yellow tang? I like macro algae and do not want them to be eaten by my lovely tangs

My Ctenochaetus tangs do not eat any macro algae other than nori and not very aggressively at it. They constantly eat film algae on the glass and rocks though.
