Test kits

Are there some test kits that are better than others? Which are the preferred ones?

salifert test kits are reliable and easy to read. they're not expensive as well. people also use hanna checkers.

I have used Salifert for years. I find them to be easy to use, and with very repeatable end points. That the price is reasonable helps also. I have considered the Hanna checkers, but they seem pretty expensive IMO.

For initial tank startup, just about any will be good enough - all you need to check are Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate. I haven't had to check any of those for years.

+1 but prefer Salifert for nitrate as the API is hard to read the color code

Also for magnesium I found the Red Sea Pro kit to be worth the extra money.

I like:
Ca and Mg: Salifert or Red Sea Pro
Alkalinity: either a Hanna Checker, Salifert or Red Sea
Phosphate: Hanna Checker
Salinity: Refractometer (calibrated with 35 ppt solution)
pH: electronic probe
