Dealing with Aiptasia and bubble algae in new tank
I just added live sand and a mix of dry and live rock to a new 36 gallon tank and began cycling it 2 days ago. When my new LED lights arrived one day into the process, I hooked them up.
Within a matter of hours after lighting the tank, I noticed that I had brought Aiptasia and bubble algae into my tank. They hitchhiked in on the live rocks I bought from the local pet shop. Since my rockscaping is a work in progress while the tank cycles, I just removed the rocks that contained the Aiptasia and bubble algae. For the aiptasia, I injected them with vinegar and removed their remains from the rock before washing it and returning it. For the bubble algae, I hung the rocks upside down and carefully pried the bubble algae off while trying not to burst the sac with spores. I then washed off the rock and placed it back in the tank. My question is, should I have handled this any differently? Is there a better way to deal with these pests since I have the advantage of a brand new tank just starting to cycle with no livestock in it yet? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1gvkMrAp7s |
