Setting up a fuge

Which setup would be betteras a refugium? As the lfs sold us just a sump the Eshopps RS-100 sump. I'm leaning towards the first pic.

I personally wouldn't even consider #1 because you will have too much turbulence coming in from your drain.
#2 I'm not sure about with the bulkhead connecting the two tanks.
I would put a small pump in the left tank to pump water into the right tank.
And if you are going to add substrate, a low divider in the right tank a few inches from the bulkhead to keep sand out of the left tank.

d2mini, what if I was to keep the sock in to have the water flow through that or would that still be much turbulence?

I hated the sock and got rid of it after a week. It does keep down the turbulence but you have to clean it frequently. Without it, I agree there would be too much disturbance. I do like my refugium though...

Ok 2nd or would it be 3rd thought, what if I was to remove the sock and then glue a 3 to 4 inch piece of plexi where the water inlet is, then make the center the fuge. I think this would work.

One other question, when should I set the fuge up, would it be after I have the main display cycled?

Picture 1 will work perfect for you. There will not be too much flow if setup as a refugium. See my attached pic.

I have the eShopps 75 and I fit a Skimmer, Phosban 150 Reactor and return pump with minimal flow through the refugium. Just leave the sock as it will keep the sump clean and will slow the waterflow.

They can both cycle at the same time.

IF you really don't want to keep the sock, just buy a foam block at least 4" x 4" and cut a round whole halfway into the middle then you can connect your input line (inside the sump) in to the center of the foam. This will be super easy to clean, won't trap much waste and will silence/disperse the flow of water into the sump.

Zwickm Thank you for the info. We will be going with your first response. But i do have one question for you is your skimmer a hob or in sump? As it looks like it is a hob.

I use the AquaMaxx HOB-1. It hangs on the outside back of the sump. The intake for it is on one side of the acrylic that separates the two Chambers and the output is on the other. The phosban 150 reactor and return pump are both inside chamber 2. You'll have no problems!
