VERY LOUD SUMP, I need help

Okay so I have a very loud sump, I have a hob overflow box. It is a eshopps pf-300.

My display is a 55 gallon with a 30 gallon sump.

I need some help on how to make this quiet, it is so loud and it is in my bedroom.

This is what the PVC is going into:http://www.marinedepot.com/Berlin_Su...FRBSAC-vi.html

Then I have another PVC pipe at the bottom that is going at least 6 inches underwater, it seems like all the noise is coming out of the back of the filter sock holder.

This is how loud it is: It better much over powers a damn tv

I really need some serious help.

it's best to run your drain line at an angle (30-45 degrees) so that the water is not crashing all the way down into your sump like a waterfall, but instead, more like a very steep river. the first thing I would do is add a section of flex pvc (or flex vinyl, or even a 45 degree elbow if necessary) immediately under the overflow box.

are you running any kind of silencer in the overflow itself?

i have a larger eshoppes, and it came with a piece of beige pvc pipe, with a small clear tube glued to the inside and protruding from the top. it was inside a circular sponge, i removed the sponge, dropped the pipe in to the bulkhead in the overflow, and it reduced the sound immensely.

Okay so I fixed my sump by plugging the back of the filter sock holder with a sponge.

Now however my overflow is loud, it makes a loud sucking noise about once every ten seconds. The water in the back where it enters the PVC pipe to go to my sump gets low and it sucks water once every 10 seconds, at the same time my sump makes a bubbling noise and a lot of bubble come up from the filter sock. I know this has to be connected, any idea on how to fix this??

Sometimes those Durso's will work but they are incredibly sensitive as far as tuning goes. That overflow will flood your house at some point trust me lol been there done that.

A better option would be to tear the tank down and drill it avoid future problems.

Another option is that I have a Life Reef overflow box with Silencer that I would consider selling. PM me for details me for details and maybe we can work something out.

Some many people have used the eshopps overflow box with no problem and have used it for years. I was just on here to get some help on how to quiet it down. If it did fail, it could maybe put 1 gallon of water on my floor as I have it at the very top of my tank so it wouldnt be that bad. There is no way I will empty everything out of the tank and drill it. That would be way too hard.

When you placed the sponge in there it put a little back pressure on the system and created a flushing or toilet affect. I would remove the sponge and do as previously mentioned put a couple of turns on your down pipe to slow the water a bit. Place your drain pipe about 1/4 to 1/2 inch below the water line and at the top utilize a Maggie Muffler. Very cheap and very effective. Purchase one for the size of yuor stand pipe in the drain box of the overflow. They can also be modified for fine tuning by drilling the air hole out just enough to shove a 6-12" piece of air tubing in it which can slide in and out until as quiet as it can be at the top and to control the flushing affect as well. Here is a link to it. http://maggiemuffler.com/ Also can be found on amazon, Ebay ect...

I have a lot of turns. I have one 90 degree like 6 inches down, and then 2 more 90 degree turns on the way to my sump too. The sump is in a completely different stand. The sponge quieted the sump down a ton. The only thing making noise now is my overflow, it was just over powered by the nose of my sump before. I tried to make a durso stand pipe but it did not fit.

I attached a video or\f how tight it is without the 90 degree elbow(because it didnt fit) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_Y6...ature=youtu.be anyone have any ideas on how to make the durso work? I do like this maggie muffler idea.

The flushing might be the airflow in the Durso. Common problem. Can you slow the return pump? That might be another way. Some folks place a valve after the pump to tune the flow. Dursos can be quiet up to a point. Then they begin to siphon to keep up with the water flow and that's the flushing.

Well I dont have the durso right because I cant get the elbow in so I know why it is making noise, the overflow box is too small for the durso

I want to buy the maggie muffler.

I am going to buy one because I think it will be the only thing that fits in my overflow, if the PVC I buy is 1 inch. This is the exact PVC pipe I bought: http://www.homedepot.com/p/VPC-1-in-...vZbuf5Z1z0x2dt

Thats the PVC that sticks up into the back of my overflow box.

What size maggie would I need? Do I only need the mini 1 inch one or do I need the 1.25 inch one?

Has anyone mentioned the hofer gurgle buster?
I made one, worked like a charm.
Had to do something, the eshoppes overflow sounded like a constant toilet flushing.

Buy a gate valve for your return line. I have a dual drain pf1000 but only use one side the other is an emergency drain. If my pump out runs my overflow I get the same sound through one pipe, if you tune your return to remain at a constant level in the sump where it should be the overflow will fill the back side up enough to eliminate that sound. I have a gate valve on my drain too, but with only one drain I'd choke the return not the drain.

This,

I had lots of noise like in your video. Research herbie overflow:

http://gmacreef.com/herbie-overflow-...method-basics/

Basically, you don't want any air in the entire return. If you accomplish this, it becomes silent.

The loudest thing in my system is currently my vortechs at this point.

You're going to need to find a way to have 2 returns (backup WILL be needed with this method) maybe invest in the eshopps pf-1000 and sell the pf-300 online.
