Please, help with ID! Aliens in my reef... :)
Dear all,
Yesterday I've found it in hidden place, behind old 'live rock' which was set up by me in 2006. This is stone tube with soft membrane (maybe with mouth-hole) and two antennas on the both side. Stuff membrane and antennas looks like 'aiptasia'. Antennas is directed ahead . 'He' or 'she' in the center of the picture. Diameter of tube is approximately 1.2 cm. Length of tube is approximately 2 cm. Length of antennas is approximately 0.8 cm. Please, help me find ID of this 'alien'! I've never seen similar before! |

Sounds too big to be a vermetid, and different anatomy. Can u get a clearer pic?

Yes, I doubt in vermetid, too.
Sorry, I have not clear picture, because it's a hidden place But I'll try to get clear photo again ... By the way, "antennas" grow from brim of tube, not from center. And they don't move. Last edited by Natalya; 01/15/2015 at 08:06 AM. |

I believe I have the same thing on a lobo that was given to me to look after. I would say it's 5mm diameter and 1.5 cm long. It has definitely been growing. White tube, two little antennae sticking out from what appears to be a lid on the tube. When feeding it throws out a fishing line. I'll try to get a pic later.

ecksreef: yours definitely sounds like a vermetid snail.
Here's a pretty good pic of one (From Advanced Aquarist) with its 'fishing line' out.

Well, hard to tell from that pic, but it looks very much like a vermetid snail to me. And I believe there are some larger species of vermetids that could have that large, and even a larger shell.
Good test would be to kick up a bunch of detritus in you tank, and see if it puts out some feeding mucus.

+1 on vermetid snail. Done a lot of research since I have a thousand tiny ones and there are many many species.

Yesterday evening I easy touched one of the antenna. It slightly bowed. But after some minutes it stuck out again. Another antenna didn't move. And my creature don't react on feeding
Maybe, it's sponge? Strange sponge? |

It is just a link to an image on the net. Try going to Google Images and search for vermetid snail. You'll see many more variations of the snail and maybe one of them will look like the animal that you have.

Thank you, but this is not like my thing
At the weekend I was watching it long time. I noticed that it has not reaction at all. Little snail was crawling at it. Little star (asterine) was sitting at it. No reaction. I think, it's just sponge of very strange form in old stone tube... Thank you, all for helping! |
