Does Refugium need light?

I have a small Refugium that I put live rock rubble from my DT tank (55gal). I had 4 crabs that came off the rock I took our, so I threw them in there too. I want to get some chaeto put it in there, to get some Copepods & ampipods growing. Would all that be fine without a light? Water flow isn't anything spectacular but is sufficient. What do you guys think of this?

If you want the chaeto algae to grow you will need light.

Any plant life needs light to grow, animals(except coral) do not but I'm sure appreciate it.

Read up on Tyree's Zonal approach. Cryptic or unlit refugiums are excellent for growing sponges which are excellent filter feeders and love the DOC that is produced in reef systems.

I would definitely have a light on. Having a refugia is great for sustaining your water but its also great way to help stabilize your PH. When your lights go off on your tank all photosynthesis stops and carbon dioxide levels go up. If you have lights coming on your refugia when your main tank lights go out you can continue to eat up carbon dioxide and in turn keep PH more stable. So dont lose that awesome aspect of the refugia.

27/7 with the light. I use an ordinary clipon shoplight with an aluminum reflector, using CFL floodlight at 6500 k. You can order same from Amazon.
