Carpet/Gig Anemones
Pretty much a stay away unless I want to lose livestock?
I have a 75g, would love to have one for my clown to host. But I also have a firefish and plan to have more fish and inverts in the future. Seems like they will snatch anything that comes close. Thoughts? |

You better hope your clowns host it fast and hope they don't let people near it. Carpets kill other fish. I'd get a small BTS if you really wanted an anem. I'd go for any Euphyillia than a anemone.

I grew my Haddoni from 1" big.. yes.. 1 inch. The first week of owning him, that haddoni took out 3 fish and 1 cleaner shrimp.. they might not eat all your fish, but once your fish get stun, chances are he's gone..
now my "smarter" fish knows to stay away from the carpet corner. I think they will be fine as long as no aggressive fish chase them around with all that said, they look absolutely beautiful. Here is my little devil.. I plan to match a blue and a red Haddoni for him in the future.

I've been looking at BTA's also... Basically just trying to learn more. I owned a sebae years ago... And obviously the carpets are gorgeous but definitely seem a bit more risky than what I had in the past. |

Personally, I find carpet anemones are one of those high risk, high reward creatures. They are not difficult to keep and are simply stunning to behold, but if you have fish that arent careful it could spell trouble.
I know one person that had one in a large tank with predatory fish. At feeding time a chunk of food went to the anemone and a very large clown trigger went to get the food and ended up getting caught by the carpet.

...And I plan on having a mandarin. Which obviously wouldn't react the same way as the trigger, but I could see it possibly bump a tentacle while searching for pods.

I have a Gigantea and he has got a fish here and there but my maxi minis have got more fish.
Firefish wont survive a anemone they are too skittish. My anemones mainly get skittish fish or fish that are chased. Fish know enough to stay away. I have a tang that goes after all fish and moves so fast he scares fish into the anemones

Thought of this thread yesterday. My firefish is always in hiding... Yesterday he was out in the middle of the tank. Then randomly took a shot at my larger clown.
I suddenly thought "Hmmm... Maybe a gig wouldn't be such a bad idea!" LOL |
