Tank Overhauled after All Fish Died (SLIDER Picture Comparison)

After a new clown introduced Velvet Disease and all my fish died.

Took the opportunity to overhaul 65 Gal Kitchen Display tank.
  • Took out and Cleaned / re-arranged rocks.
  • Changed lighting from ( MH/T5 ) to ( Kessil LED / T5[dimmable] )
  • Old large Tunze Pump replaced with Maxpect Gyre XF-150
  • Expanded Apex for Full Automation of pumps, lighting, dosing, PH, TEMP monitoring.
  • Replaced noisy glass sump with Rubbermaid Tub.
  • Going to stay Fish Free for a while to Focus on Corals.

This single picture shows Before & After using a WEBsite page slider to compare.

You can click on the slider, and slide across (back and forth) to compare.

** Page only works with "Chrome" or "FireFox Broswer" on a PC, and some tablets **
** IE Browser not supported

Picture Comparion with SLIDER (Before & After)

Before anyone says anything. I learned my lesson about Quarantine after over a decade of luck.

Sorry you lost your fish to Velvet disease. I went through something similar. Since you are not introducing more fish yet, keep in mind that the cycle
for Oodinium is at least 6 weeks without prophylactic medication. If you keep your tank free of fish for 6 weeks, you should be clear of this lousy disease.

I actually have been Fish Free for over 12 weeks, so it should be safe to introduce fish.
However will wait a bit longer to find ideal specimens (if I ever go back to having fish in this tank). I have a 2nd tank with fish, so the break from feeding two tanks is nice.

I can't say for sure if it was Velvet that wipe out all my fish, but symptoms that I caught on camera (while they were alive) indicate this.

The one thing I'll say from my experience is that fish disease is quite different from a Parameter Tank crash. Corals don't give you clues that something is wrong.

In my case I did notice the Large Powerblue Tang looking pale. Odd behavior from other fish (Swimming differently. Not up walls, but back an forth.).

- When first fish died (new specimen), I thought in was due to improper introduction/aclimization. I actually bought a 2nd clown hoping to do better but that was a mistake since disease was already spreading in the tank.
- When 2nd fish died, I thought it was due to introducing new Kalk reactor (around when event started). Reactor caused a increase in PH.
(However I was scratching my head since all Invertebrates were fine)
- When 3rd fish died, I though it was Nitrate spike since I wasn't able to get 2nd fish out. It just disappeared deep within the rocks.
- At 4th fish death, I was scrambling with no experience and lacking a quarantine/treatment tank. (It was tool late, only a couple fish left).
- At the end it was clear to see abnormal skin on the fish. Also, Ick type spots.

You never get really good in this hobby till you have experience. I'll be much more ready/alert next time. I'll be quarantining all new fish in a small 10 Gal tank that I now have.
