Noise when removing filter socks?
I am in the market for a new sump. In the past I havent run filter socks most of the time, but on occasions its nice to be able to.
I am considering a sump with a bubble trap followed by a couple of built in 7" socks. Something like the attached photos. My questions is for those of you with a set up like this, how noisy is your sump when the socks are removed? |

When I swapped to a sumped system last year, I wanted it to be as quiet as possible.
The return in my sump is below the water level, the return pipe being inside the filter sock by 2", within a filter sock compartment. This part of the pipe is flexible. I just lower the filter sock below the pipe and remove.

I'm not concerned with changing the socks. I actually plan to run without socks 90 plus percent of the time. I know that quite a bit of water can flow over a baffle very quietly. With the built in filter sock holders the water won't go over a baffle, and instead will fall through the hole where the sock should be. I'm concerned this may be quite noisy, and based on that I'm considered going without built in sock holders.

Put a union on the sock drops and make the pipe off the union long enough to be under water if there is a sock or not. Problem solved, noise comes from water falling and hitting other water. For further clarification on that sump make two drops for after the union, one that drops into the overflow for a sock and one that bypasses the overflow into the area where the sock should be. Change out the drops depending on if you want to run a sock or not. Make both long enough to be underwater.
