Used LR
I was looking to purchase some live rock from a local who is tearing down their tank... looking around I found that I need to make sure that it hasn't been used with medicines that contain copper. Another person warned me that it could cause issues with the phosphates.
So my question is if I buy the used rock and let it sit in my tank to cycle what harm could come if is part of the start up of my system. The other question I have is can I store the rock somehow for about a month until everything is in line to start setting up the tank? Thanks! Scott |

A rubbermaid trashcan or large tote will work fine to store the rock. A powerhead and saltwater is all you need though depending on location a heater might be required as well.
Why are they breaking down the tank? The answer to this question if truthful is often a good indicator as to the condition. What you don't want is someone else problem and believe me they will lie through their teeth to a noobie to reclaim their money back on the rock even if its fubar. Yes you can correct it, if there are inverts alive in the tank then I doubt copper contamination. If it's purple and covered with cool things (not aptasia or bubble algae) then its good to go and desirable. If it's covered in green algae, aptasia, or bubble algae it is best left to the backyard or a more experienced reefer who has the time and patience to invest in bringing the rock back around.
