Did I just fry my return pump?
I purchased a sump and return pump off someone doing a tear down. I (stupidly) tossed the pump in my FW aquarium (which is being drained) to try and let the pump drain the tank for me.
Well it worked for 2 minutes. I pulled it out and looked at it and it says "do not submerge past water line" with a water line mark on it. Is it fried or will it function once I dry it out. *bangs head on wall* |

I've never heard of a pump like that. Any idea what brand/model?

Askolls are great pumps, but I've never heard of a partially submersible pump. It's never a good thing when electronics get wet, but it wouldn't hurt to dry it out and try. Just don't hold your breath.

It should be dry today. I'll give it a shot. If not, I'll have to replace it.

Put it in rice to help it dry faster.

My guess is that it will be fine. I have never seen an aquarium pump that can't be fully submersed. They are all fully sealed. Even if they say not to.

That's what I thought too. But it only worked for a few minutes and was working when I got it so I have to assume I water logged it.

it could be some bureaucratic crap, heaters sold in Canada have "do not submerse past here" lines even tho they are fully sealed units.

Actually, some larger pumps are non-submersible. My return pump, an Iwaki 100, is for use outside the sump: it's bulkheaded on with an easy release. You might check the mfg's website.

The inlet definitely goes under water. I'll see if I can figure out how to post some pics.
