Alaskan Reef Keeping Questions

How is the hobby up there? I'll be moving up to the Anchorage this fall and and wondering what I'm in for. I'll probably stick with a nano reef instead of my 120g, and I have all of the equipment I'll need. My livestock collection, however, will be sold off before the drive up. I'm not going to want to do a cold water tank, as cool as some of those are.

Well we have a couple fish stores,Alaska coral and fish and Regal reef. We also have a couple Petco's and Petsmart's,plus a local store called Pet zoo,but they are not really a sw store. There are also a few sites that ship up here, but shipping is a killer! I just moved up here(again) last year and had to get rid of my 65 gallon reef. So I am in the planning stages once again. I don't have a lot of room so I am looking at a 60 gal cube.

Thanks for the info. I'm probably going to try to bring along some simple corals since I'm driving up. I'm confident that I can keep some Zs and Ps alive, and I'm going to attempt some LPS as well...say 5-6g worth. It's going to suck breaking down my 120. It's just taking off at this point. The trade will be well worth it, though. I'm going to keep all of my equipment, except for the 120g tank and stand, so I'll be able to rebuild once there. I'll probably keep it to my 34g Solana while up there.

Just remember you will not be able to bring live rock with you, nor any corals on on rubble. It has to be on plugs or other man made items. Live rock falls under cites as does any coral with a skeleton. Remember you have to drive though Canada to get to Alaska.

Yes, Dudley Do-Right wont hesitate to pull you from your car and tie you up, leaving abandoned on a railroad track... for having corals in your car

I plan on taking a ferry from Seattle to AK, most likely. I'll check on the legalities, of course, but I don't think it'll be an issue since it's US to US. I haven't worked out all the details yet, but I'm certainly not going to get probed and searched by the mounties for a few frags
