MarineLand 90 Overflows

What is the purpose of the vents on the middle of the overflow?(half way down) It confuses me.

That is what I wondered too.My 220 came with an explanation with the Durso kit. Those vents help draw water from the lower half of your aquarium and into the overflow.I don't know if it really works, that way,but that is what they are for...

I have a Marineland 180 and they definitely work. Seems like a venturi effect - as the water rushes over the top of the overflow it sucks water into those lower vents and up through the overflow "column" behind the cover. I have definitely seen things get stuck up against the lower portion so it's doing a little work for sure.

What Eric said and I would think as a fail safe if the upper "teeth" got blocked then the lower opening would help to keep the tank from overflowing. but mainly the first
