How much rock for a 150g? And type?
Next summer is the plan to buy a new 150g tank...I want to start planning now!!
I think the BEST thing I can do is buy my rocks now and let them cook in a brute trash can in the garage. My goal is for a really naturally looking reef tank, BUT using the least amount of rock possible. I want to create caves and overhangs, but now end up with a massively crowded tank. Would it look weird to mix BRS Pukani and Reef Saver? I like the look of the Pukani, but the cost of it per pound is quite a lot...so could I use the Reef saver as a "filler" and the Pukani as the majority? Like 1 : 3 reef saver : pukani ratio? How much rock should I aim to buy with my goals? Think 75-90lbs would be fine? |

First thing you need to figure out is what you want to keep... Fish and coral wise then you can plan what type and how much rock. There are other means to get filtration

Several QTs |

That is part of the plan as well.
Its going to be like 85% SPS and some mixed LPS like hammer corals etc. Fishwise, I am leaning tangs and higher energy active fish like a small school of anthias. I am still reading up on different fish and their requirements for the list. Maybe some smaller gobies too so I would want some caves for them to be able to hide in. |

I just upgraded to a 150g Xtall last week from a 60g. I kept my old rock ( mix of Pukani and reef saver 65lbs worth) and bought 80lbs of Pukani reef mix and I feel 140lbs makes a nice landscape. I did a nice lagoon aquascape that measure 40Lx18dx15h and feel that its the perfect amount. I think 75-90 would not be enough.
BTW this is 2hrs after setting it up so excuse the cords and mess |

They both look the same after a while. I think you'll be happy with whatever you'll go with. I got 10-15 pounds of the shelf rock which made some nice caves

I just finished aquascaping my tank with Marco rocks and was very pleased with their rocks.
My advice is to order more rock than you think you will need and sell what is left over or save it for a later project. Having extra rock will give you more options when aquascaping. |
