It doesn't use DE to kill the pests. It uses a special grade of DE to form a very, very fine filter which is finer than the size of the pest. Or most anything else. When you turn the motor on, it sucks the DE tight up against fabric flanges and continues to pull water through it: and it's really potent---now and again somebody would forget and set the arrow to blow rather than suck, and blow all the DE out into the tank in a white mess---but turn the arrow the other way and it would suck it back just as fast with nothing harmed. Can't speak to delicate corals, which we didn't have in those days, but buttons and mushrooms took no damage---recovery was that fast. Very powerful pump, very, very fine filter. Most filter socks are 200 micron. The diatom filter is .5 micron.

Pretty sure Paul B still uses one. If you need to know anything about them he would be the one to ask.

I must have understood it's function wrong then when I origionally looked into them... I'm going to look some more.

-------

Getting frustrated. Called 4 lfs, no one has a microscope. So I asked, if I came to you asking to identify this... One told me I didn't need a microscope. They "are trained"... Uh huh. One told me to go to Toys R Us... Really?? The other two had no answer, other then find a marine biology professor.

-------

Tank looks great. Lights are on now. 92 hours in the dark did wonders. Corals are looking better then ever, with the exception of a couple SPS, but they look like they may forgive me.

But...... Yep. Still have dino's.

Blackout... What would you advise?

I'll tell you to go where one of your LFS told you. Toys r us. They have a pretty decent range of microscopes. Professional lvl? No. Will it do what you want it to? Absolutely. Why is that so hard to believe?

It's not that I don't believe they have one, it was the way she said it. "They have the ones kids use to look at stuff"... Then proceeded to tell me in 5 years of working at (insert name of store here)... She had never heard of anyone using a microscope to check things in their aquarium. She clearly thinks I'm off my rocker.

ToysRUs actually *does* carry microscopes. I trolled all my friends with kids, turned up 3 or 4 who had them. You can't see a gorram thing even at 50x. One had a wonderful view of fungal hyphae...on the objective lens.

I think you'll do much better asking a university professor. I've now got a very basic student microscope and am even more confused because I may have multiple species of dinos. And it's impossible to get any kind of picture with an ipod.

Your tank looks waaay better! The dinos in the 2nd picture don't look close to anything. Can you go in and squirt them with some h202?

Lol get used to that look.. had to pick up some basic supplies at a chain non-salt FS yesterday. The employees are trained to ask what's up with your tank. I must have said "dinoflagellates" about 80 times..friend with me is killing herself laughing in the next aisle. Employee is now convinced I think I have "dinosaurs". She recommended melafix.

ivy didn't ask if they had a microscope..

Haha. That's funny. I usually buy my FW fish from petsmart or petco just cause they are much closer than the LFS . I go to buy a molly and they ask me like 40 million questions. To the OP , you can prolly get a fairly decent scope off of amazon for cheap.

Edit: Just looked and they have several with built in cameras, and also have usb out to hook to a laptop or desktop for a tad over 100.

Edit 2: Well crap, I want a microscope now. 119 bucks later will be here on saturday.

Man can I borrow your scope? LOL j/k

Going to shop online tonight. I don't want to just buy anything, because I have horrible luck and it will probably be junk. Which equals wasted money.

I never buy anything from amazon unless its 4 stars or greater. There return policy is also awesome in case you end up with crap. I also only buy stuff with prime. If you get something thats garbage they pay return shipping and youll have your refund like 2 days later. If you have an amazon CC, they usually refund you the money as soon as you do the RMA online even before you ship the product back.

Edit: This is the one I got. http://www.amazon.com/AmScope-M158C-...5%3A2470955011

Crap, now I gotta figure out something to do with a microscope.

You have a SW tank. You will never be bored with a scope.

I'll have to find it on the Canadian site
